Essntls of skincare - Episode 2.

How does skincare protect your skin, and what else does it protect? Quite a lot it seems.

Let’s start at the beginning; Everyone who’s ever met a baby up close knows that they have smooth, soft skin that is free of wrinkles and very hydrated. Peachy. Then life happens. Harsh environments, stress, age and gravity severely affect the skin. Which in turn affects your whole well-being.

So how does your skin actually operate over time?

For starters, it consists of three layers. The innermost layer consists of fat cells that protect your whole body. The 2nd layer is a collection of connective tissue that contains collagen, and the outer layer is made up of scale like cells which is what you see as “your skin”.

The most trippy fact is that cells move through these three layers, starting in the innermost layer and traveling outward until they’ve done their job in the outer layer and flake off.

Skincare helps all three of your skin layers do their job efficiently and without interruption if you make sure to do two simple things: Cleansing and Moisturizing.

Cleansing is essential in removing dirt and dead skin cells to prevent pimples or acne. Cleansing can however remove the natural oils that make up the first line of defense, so using an oil-based cleanser is a better option than soap or chemical cleansers.

Moisturizing is also critical. Even if you use a cleansing oil, a good moisturizer works to restore the water to the skin deeply and helps protect it on the surface.

A basic skincare routine should include Cleansing and Moisturizing, and you should do it every single day.

Aside from your skincare routine, you can help your skin protect itself by being careful with sun exposure. Drinking a lot of water to maintain a healthy water balance is also critical, as well as (the most worn out and yet still true advice ever) eating a healthy diet.

Healthy skin, healthy life.

Another cool fact is that skincare isn’t just important to prevent premature aging and to elevate skin quality, it also plays a big role in keeping you from getting sick. Our skin is the largest and most important barrier against infection that we have. When it gets dry or irritated, cracks can occur. And cracks in the skin make a person more prone to infection. Infection means the flu, colds, sick days, no partying and less productivity. No fun at all.

Stay clean, stay moisturized.
